The 60-Year Comeback of ELIZA: AI’s First Chatbot Resurrected

Imagine finding a dusty time capsule, cracking it open, and discovering a piece of history that still works. That’s exactly what happened when researchers unearthed the code for ELIZA, the world’s first chatbot, buried in the archives for 60 years.

Things to Know:

  • ELIZA debuted in the 1960s at MIT, thanks to Joseph Weizenbaum. It wasn’t just a novelty; it was groundbreaking. ELIZA mimicked a psychotherapist, responding to users with lines like “Please tell me your problem.”

  • The chatbot ran on a now-obsolete programming language called MAD-SLIP. Over time, its legacy was copied into other formats, leaving the original code to fade into obscurity.

  • That is, until 2021, when a team of “software archaeologists” stumbled across the original code in Weizenbaum’s papers at MIT.

  • Restoring ELIZA wasn’t plug-and-play. Researchers debugged, cleaned the code, and built an emulator to mimic the computers of the 1960s. After months of work, they got ELIZA running again on December 21, 2023.

  • Here’s the wild part: they discovered a small bug in ELIZA’s programming but decided to leave it unfixed to preserve its authenticity. It’s like keeping a crack in the Mona Lisa just as da Vinci left it.

ELIZA is more than a chatbot. It’s a reminder of how far we’ve come in tech and how much we stand to lose if we forget our roots. Sure, ELIZA doesn’t rival today’s AI, but it pioneered something modern chatbots often miss: the art of listening.

AI Wants to Add 10 Years to Human Lives

OpenAI, in collaboration with the biotech startup Retro Biosciences, has introduced a new AI model, GPT-4b micro, designed to engineer proteins that may extend human lifespan by 10 years.

Things to Know:

  • Innovative biotech: GPT-4b micro has improved the effectiveness of two Yamanaka factors by over 50%, advancing the potential for regenerative medicine.

  • Strategic partnership: Retro Biosciences, backed by $180 million from OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, has been collaborating with OpenAI for nearly a year on this project.

This marks OpenAI’s first major AI project centered on biological data, potentially revolutionizing regenerative medicine. It could lead to breakthroughs in creating replacement cells, regenerating organs, and extending human longevity.
